[CALL FOR PAPERS] III International Conference “Teaching with Comics”(WG5)

The Instituto Franklin-UAH, the Sociedad Académica de Estudios de Cómic, and the European project COST Action CA24160 COS-MICs are organising the 2nd International Conference of the SAEC in conjunction with the 3rd International Conference Teaching with Comics, with the collaboration of the Cátedra UAH de Investigación y Cultura del Cómic and the Cátedra de Estudios del Cómic FSM-UV. The aim of this conference is to showcase and further develop current research lines in comics studies, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field, fostering synergies among researchers, and exploring future directions of inquiry, with a particular emphasis on the potential of comics as an educational tool. The main research strands of the conference, though by no means exhaustive, are as follows:

  • Comics as an object of study.
  • Comics and their relationships with other artistic disciplines: film, literature, theatre, painting.
  • Comics and translation.
  • Comics as a product of their time: diversity, feminism, sustainability.
  • The representation of history through comics: from historical comics to comics journalism.
  • Drawing words, writing images: comics, multimodality, and visual literacy.
  • New trends in comics: from graphic poetry to abstraction.
  • Teaching with Comics: Comics and education—experiences and best practice.
  • Teaching with Comics: Sustainability through comics.
  • Teaching with Comics: Comics as a classroom methodology.
  • Teaching with Comics: Comics in higher education.
  • Teaching with Comics: Comics and inclusive education.
  • Teaching with Comics: Comics and reading and literary education.
  • Teaching with Comics: Comics in the classroom—research and proposals.
  • Teaching with Comics: Ecological and environmental awareness in comics.
  • Teaching with Comics: Comics and science—comparative approaches.

Information on submission of proposals

Proposals for papers should include an abstract of no more than 300 words and a biographical note of 150 words. They must also include keywords and indicate the relevant thematic strand. Proposals may be written in Spanish or English, must be anonymised (i.e. contain no identifying information), and should be submitted via the form available on the website of the Instituto Franklin-UAH.

Complete panels are also welcome and should consist of three or four papers. In such cases, the panel convenor must submit the abstracts for all papers included in the panel, along with the CVs of the contributors. Each individual paper must comply with the guidelines outlined above.

The submission deadline is 31 May 2026. Notification of acceptance will be sent before 15 September 2026.
